Markazi Jamiat Dawah is a landmark building, with a distinctive green dome, located at the junction of Camden Terrace and Lumb Lane in the Manningham area of the city. The purpose built masjid is the oldest of the three Dawah masjids in Bradford and prior to the construction of the existing building occupied a terraced house adjacent to the masjid. The masjid has a capacity of 1,500 people, with two large prayer halls, and is used by approximately 600 people on a weekly basis. Programmes are delivered in the masjid in both Urdu and English.
Bradford has the second highest proportion of Muslims in England and Wales outside London. An estimated 100,000 Muslims reside in the city, representing around 20% of the city’s population, with this figure projected to rise to 28% by 2011. The Manningham area, where the masjid is situated, is predominantly Muslim.
The original Camden Terrace Masjid, a terraced house adjacent to the existing masjid, was founded in 1976 by Munir Qasim, Shaukat Ali, Mohammed Ramzan, Lal Khan, Abdul Malik and Mohammed Amin. The masjid was registered as a charity on 9th February 1993 (charity no. 1017116). The new purpose built, two storey, masjid building was erected on land which was previously occupied by a doctor’s surgery. The new building was opened on Friday 28th April 2000 by Dr Abdullah Bin Abdul Muhsin At Turki, currently the Secretary General of the Muslim World League and formerly the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Endowments in Saudi Arabia. The building was significantly extended in 2005 to provide additional capacity to both prayer halls. The old masjid building was fully renovated in 2007 and is now used for classrooms and accommodation for the Imam. In 2010 further improvements were made to the new building to increase the number of toilets and accommodate more people in the wudu area. The first khutba in English was delivered in 2008 and are currently held once a month.
The masjid has close links with the Bradford Council for Mosques and other community bodies.
The masjid has extensive facilities including a separate prayer hall for sisters including wudu facilities. It is also equipped with an extensive library, kitchen, office and janazah facilities. There is a small car park to the front of the masjid which accommodates approximately twenty cars.
