Brief History:

Muslims make up the second largest religious group in Keighley. According to the 2001 census there were about 8,000 Muslims in Keighley at that time, which represents 16% of the local population. Most had come to Britain in the 1960s from Pakistan. As of 2011 there were seven masjids in Keighley.

The Muhammadi Masjid was founded in 1991 with the aim of establishing a centre based on the authentic teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah in Keighley. The two-storey masjid building was formerly a TV rental shop & snooker centre. In 1998 the building was extended to provide improved facilities for sisters including a separate sisters’ entrance, wudu area and prayer hall. As part of the works, a new kitchen and office were also added to the masjid. Friday sermons in English (previously only delivered in Urdu) were first introduced at the masjid in 2003 and are currently held at least once a month.

Current Activities:

  • Qur’an and Islamic Studies Madrasah for children (five days a week);
  • Arabic classes for children (once a week);
  • Youth club;
  • Weekly classes for sisters;
  • Monthly events in both English and Urdu;

The vision of the masjid is to increase dawah activities for both Muslims and non-Muslims, in English, under the banner of ‘Moving Muslims Forward’. Other future aspirations include increasing the capacity of the masjid to accommodate 650 worshippers and also to establish a fully functional library.
